State junior paddlers shine in Labuan

KUCHING: Sarawak junior paddlers did a magnificent job at the recent 23rd Malaysia Hopes Table Tennis Championship in Labuan by capturing the overall champion’s crown.

They accumulated 54 points from winning won five gold, three silver and three bronze medals to dethrone defending champions Selangor (24 points) who garnered one gold, two silvers and two bronzes while Melaka were third with 19 points for winning two golds and one silver.

Fourth to 13th placings were occupied by Kuala Lumpur (17), Johor (16), Pulau Pinang (13), Putrajaya (10), Perak (9), Sabah (7), Negeri Sembilan (5), Kedah (5), Pahang (1) and host Labuan (0).

This was a tremendous improvement from last year’s two-gold, three-silver and two-bronze feat in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The gold medals came from the Under 13 Boys team, Under 10 Girls team, Under 10 Boys Singles, Under 10 Boys Doubles and the Under 10 Girls Doubles while the silvers were won in the Under 10 Boys team, Under 13 Boys Singles through Jason Siaw and Under 10 Girls Singles through Alice Chang.

Meanwhile, Sarawak took the Under 13 Girls team bronze, Under 13 Boys Doubles bronze through Clement Sim/Gilbert Ling and the Under 10 Boys Singles bronze through Roydan Kho.

Gilbert Ling, who is from Kuching and plays with a ‘cutter’ style, was the best performer with two gold and one silver that he won in the Under 10 Boys Singles, Under 10 Boys Doubles and U13 Boys Team events respectively.

The excellent results also exceeded team manager Helena Wee’s expectations as the majority of the players were new faces while only seven players were retained from last year’s squad.

Other members of the state squad were Derrick Tsai, Gabriel Ling, Morgen Bong, Brainard Kho, Sii Hoe Hong and Fernando Joseph Yiek (boys) and Kylie Teo, Foo Wui Jia, Angel Chan, Catherine Chan, Carmen Yiek, Andrea Tan, Crystal Tiong, Foo Wui Ying and Sim Yu Qi (girls).
