Labuan Won 3 Gold, 1 Silver, 1 Bronze

LABUAN, Feb 13 - Labuan Karate team comprising only 6 athletes won 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze in the 3rd ‘Silent Knight’ Asia Karate Cup 2012. This international open karate championship was held on 11th & 12th February 2012 at the Olympic Indoor Sports Centre, Wisma OCM (Jalan Hang Jebat) in Kuala Lumpur. It was a perfect contribution as all 6 contestants contributed to the medals haul.

A total of about 20 international club teams from India, Indonesia, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Vietnam, Nepal, UAE, Bangladesh, Thailand, Brunei and including Malaysia took part in this 2-day championship.

A total of 45 Kata & Kumite events/categories for the Children/Cadet (between 8 - 15 years), the Junior (16 - 17 years) and Senior (above 18 years) involving 300 foreign and 400 local participants competed.

Local State SUKMA teams from Federal Territory (which comprises Labuan, Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur), Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Perak and Sabah participated in preparation for the upcoming prestigious SUKMA Games to be held in Pahang this July.

Labuan Karate Association (LKA) secretary, Bryan Tan said it was an unexpected sweet outing considering the presence of perennial karate powerhouse countries like Vietnam, Indonesia and Uzbekistan.

Bryan who was also heads the team alongside team coach, Aswadee Taba was full of praise for Mohd Norfahan in the individual boys' kata event as he upstages bigger and stronger exponents from Indonesia, Uzbekistan and Sri Lanka en route to the gold with his brilliant and flawless kata (pattern) performance in the 14 - 15 years cadet category.

Labuan's only 3 SUKMA senior exponents, Nini Erfani, Syarulniza and Christina also performed superbly in their sparring events to contribute to another 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals. Junior exponents Hazimah and Caroline contributed to the bronze in the team sparring event. The event was won by Vietnam who had earlier defeated Labuan in a close semifinal match

LKA President, Edward Kong when contacted congratulated the team and hoped the good result will spurred them to greater achievements in the future.
