Labuan Karate Team Won 8 Gold

KOTA KINABALU, Feb 28 - The Universal Shotokan Karate (USK) team of Labuan comprising 27 athletes won 8 Gold, 6 Silver and 8 Bronze at the just-concluded "Kota Kinabalu City Day" Karate Open Championship 2012 which was held on 25th & 26th February 2012 at the KK Community Centre in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

USK Labuan, a newly-registered association affiliated to Labuan Karate Association (LKA) is a member of the international karate body, Universal Shotokan Karate Union (USKU) in Japan under founder, GrandMaster Kenichi Fumakiza.

A total of 11 club teams from Kuching, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Labuan and hosts Sabah took part in the 2-day championship which was organised in conjunction with the month-long K.K. City day celebrations.
 
A total of 32 Kata & Kumite categories for the Children/Cadet (between 8 - 13 years / 14 - 15 years), the Junior (16 - 17 years) and the Senior (18 years and above) events involving about 300 participants were competed. Labuan competed in only 22 categories.

USK Labuan coach Aswadee Taba said the participation was in preparations for the upcoming 22nd National Cadet/Junior Karate championship to be held in Miri, Sarawak on 15 - 18 March 2012.

LKA secretary, Bryan Tan who also heads the 29-member contingent said eventhough we were placed second, it was yet another outstanding performance considering we lost out by a shortfall of 2 mere  bronze medals to the overall champions, Sekolah Menengah Sains Sabah (SMESH) with the highest number of 38 athletes which won 8 G / 6 S / 10 B.

He added that the organisers will invite Japan, Australia, Indonesia and Korea to make the fifth edition of next year's Open C'ship an international one.

The City Mayor, Datuk Abidin Madingkir officiated the opening of the tournament with a grandeur lion dance performance.
