Labuan duo missed out by a whisker

LABUAN, March 20 -- Labuan managed to win only 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals in the just-concluded 22nd MAKAF National Junior and Cadet Karate Championship which was held last weekend from 15 - 18 March 2012 at the Miri Indoor Stadium in Miri, Sarawak.

A total of 19 State/Style affiliates under the Malaysia Karate Federation (MAKAF)participated in this annual national competition as a selection platform to choose the best to represent our country for the upcoming 12th Asian Junior and Cadet Karate Championship, 2012 to be held in Uzbekistan this July.

Labuan Karate Association (LKA) secretary, Bryan Tan said, "We sent a team of 7 athletes competing in only 8 of the 32 categories in this championship. So finishing 11th placing out of the 19 teams is a commendable effort and I am confident that we will come out stronger next time. Favourites Mohd Norfahan and Syarulniza just lost by a solitary point to their exponents in both finals. Our reigning national senior champion, Christina and Nini Erfani lost to the eventual champions in their respective categories.

But looking on the positive side, our two debutants, Caroline Tan and Hazimah Jamil combined well with Syarulniza to win the bronze in the junior female team kata event, with Caroline also managing a bronze in her female (16-17 years) individual kumite under-48 kg event".

Coach Aswadee Taba also said, "All the 5 medalists had given their best for this national junior tournament after undergoing centralised training for the past 3 months but luck was not with us. And I am now setting a 4-gold target for next year's edition in Kedah".

For the record, perennial powerhouse Penang retained the overall title with 9G/6S/6B medals, second-placed Hayashi, Kuala Lumpur won 7G/5S13B with Sabah third on 4G/6S/10B and Malaysia Goshin-Ryu fourth on 4G/5S.
